Madonna Launches Her First-Ever Fragrance

We all have at least one Madonna song on repeat, but soon we’ll be able to own a little piece of the icon in a brand new form—fragrance. The top selling female artist of all time is set to drop her first scent, Truth or Dare by Madonna, in April 2012, and we’re a little giddy. Last year, along with daughter Lourdes, Madonna launched her Material Girl fashion line at Macy’s, leaving beauty as the obvious next step for her empire.

Madge told WWD, “I have always been obsessed by fragrance and for years wanted to create something personal that was an expression of me but that other people could relate to as well. Something honest, and yet daring, hence the name Truth or Dare.”

She also revealed that the scent will be “something classical and timeless and yet modern.” Rich florals, woods and vanilla are expected, creating chiaroscuro within the fragrance. We love the duality that Truth or Dare will represent, and we can’t wait to get our hands on this fragrance.

Silver Rain Perfume – Unique In Style and Scent

Have you seen a perfume that looks so unique in style and scent? Heard about Silver Rain? Well, that the name! This perfume is said to be one of the best designed fragrances on earth not only for its elegant packaging style, but most for its scent.

The Silver Rain perfume is manufactured by the design house of La Prairie. La Prairie is a Switzerland-based company that started as part of a clinic that has pioneered in anti-aging cellular therapy. It switched its interest to beauty care, particularly in skin care, and the company then started to produce items that are essential to vitality and appearance of the skin. One of the best lines that the company has created for the peoples advantage is the line of Silver Rain perfume.

The Silver Rain perfume was designed out of this concept:

On alpine glaciers at the top of the world, the purest rain on earth is transformed into brilliant silver ice crystals, as dazzling as captured sunlight. In the spring, a thousand feet below, rare botanicals bloom in alpines meadows, watered by this remarkable silver. (LaPrairie)
From such concept, the Silver Rain perfumes were made and packaged in a way that they look like a silver raindrop. Just imagine the form of a raindrop and associate Silver Rain with that form. Isn’t it great? Well, it is!

The Silver Rain perfume now comes in variety. One of the recently formulated is the Silver Rain Shimmer Mist. This product is currently included in the line of La Prairies latest. It is highly valued for its shade of lavender that is presented with an ethereal silver shimmer. It is also made from a combination of fruity green apple and crushed coriander with notes of agar wood, musk, and vanilla. It is this combination actually that makes the Shimmer Mist truly rich in floral heart scent that is long lasting. Since it is created with a silver shimmer, it does offer a discreet shimmer glaze to the skin.

There is also the Siler Rains Cachette line of Limited Edition perfume designed by the renowned French silversmith Christofle. This perfume comes in a form of a Sterling silver raindrop, making it one of finely handcrafted piece of art. This perfume now comes in three unique individual scents, including Silver Rain, Silver Spice and Silver Sensuality.

La Prairie also had produced the Eau de Parfum Spray which is designed and formulated from a blend of green apple, verbena flower, calabrain, bergamot, crushed coriander and anise. According to some reviews, this product comes with heart notes of dewfruit berry, plum, gardenia, tuberose blossom, and crystallized sugar accord. This perfume even has noted of sandalwood, rare agarwood, tonka bean, and vanilla.

Note that almost all of the Silver Rain perfumes capture the perfect shape of the raindrop, and it is this image that actually sets Silver Rain unique from the others.

A Whiff of Perfume History

For when you want to sniff around the origins and evolution of perfume and how its powers were perceived along the way.

Long, before the existence of soaps and clean personal hygiene, perfume was invented, no doubt to mask any number of unpleasant odors. This has been credited to the Medes, ancestors of the Kurds, in about the 10th Century B.C.

The Egyptians pioneered perfumery as an industry in about 1580 B.C. Perfume became a daily staple in both religious and boudoir rituals, the latter occurring most frequently in the chambers of Queen Cleopatra.

Drawing on their experience with plants for medicinal remedies, the Egyptians developed new methods of extracting and processing scents from plant and animal sources. China, Persia, Arabia and India sold raw materials to Egyptian perfumers, and Alexandria flourished as the most important trade center in that part of the world.

By 350 B.C. the Greeks had developed such faith in the powers of perfume that they sprinkled it into the air at their feasts so that it could be dispersed by the wings of flying doves to elevate the appetite for food and lovemaking.

At one point the obsession with perfume got so out of hand that it was actually pronounced illegal. But perfume proved unstoppable. It was thought to make people smarter, cure illness, and secure the favor of the gods. Rich people even went to their graves holding a bottle of perfume. And not to be excluded, poor people were placed in caskets bearing a painting of a bottle of perfume.

Fast forward to Italy, 500 A.D. Now perfume was the rage for both religious ceremonies and personal use. Soon the use of perfume spread to the Islamic world. But alas, the fall of the Roman Empire brought the perfume industry down with it.

Now fast way forward to France, 1656. The French established a “guild of glove and perfume makers” and the perfume industry came alive again. Perfumed gloves became the rage. The kings had “perfumed courts.” New blends continued to elevate consumer demand and finally came Eau de Cologne: a fragrance for internal consumption! Yes, they drizzled cologne onto sugar lumps and stirred it into wines. They rinsed their mouths with it, poured it into bath water, and even used it for enemas.

The 1800s found France flooding the world with perfumes and colognes born of new chemical discoveries and manufacturing processes. This spawned the designer bottling industry, and its lavish works of glass raised the art of merchandising to new heights.

The 1900s brought the advent of synthetic fragrance materials, making it possible to formulate many thousands of scents. So today we can select perfumes and colognes from an endless universe of designer scents to delight the senses, inspire ooohhs and ahhs, and complement every personality.

The Benefits of Wearing Perfume

Perfume has been used throughout history for a variety of reasons. Perfume has proved itself to be a valuable commodity in both ancient and modern times, with the modern perfume industry turnover in its billions every year. Perfume is a luxury, rather than a necessity, and yet its popularity grows rather than wavers every year. The reason behind this is the enjoyment that the wearer gains, and this type of enjoyment stems from the recognised and unnoticed benefits that wearing perfume provides.

Firstly, the effect of perfume on our brains is not necessarily recognised though the effects are certainly enjoyed. Each scent, whether natural or synthetic, emits molecules which enter the nasal passages and eventually reach the olfactory epithelium. This part of the nose has a vast amount of receptor neurons which are each covered in hairs called cilia. These cilia trap the scent and send a message to the brain which enables a person to recognize the perfume. The ability to smell immediately has a positive impact. This is important as some research has shown that people without a sense of smell have a less happy life than those who can smell; scents trigger emotions and affect our mood.

As a result of this finding, perfume has become as much a science as it has an accessory. Aromatherapy studies the effects of natural botanical perfume ingredients, usually in the form of oils in their purest state. Its looks at the effects upon mood and general well being, and applies the knowledge by improving the perfume in the environment and offering a variety of aromatherapy services aimed at improving people`s lives. Aromacology applies this same approach to any available scent, from flowers to sand, and the findings are currently assisting perfume manufacturers worldwide.

The ingredients used in perfume may improve your concentration and enhance your mood. There is a long list of scents that are said to trigger this stimulating effect. Perfumes that contain ingredients such as ginger, sandalwood and rose are claimed by aroma therapists and aromacologists alike to have a stimulating effect on brain neurons. The increased stimulation aided by the use of perfume assists in many everyday tasks, from more focused studying to extra stamina and energy, balanced weight loss to an improved immune system.

Another benefit to be gained from wearing perfume is that it can relax your mood. Certain scents have aldehydes which have a calming effect on the brain. The perfume oils which have this effect include eucalyptus and citronella. Other scents can act as a form of sedative, aiding restful sleep, which helps reduce anxiety and tension which in turn creates a wealth of health benefits. The most famous of these perfumes include lavender and bergamot, which have been used for this purpose for centuries and in a variety of countries worldwide.

The benefits of perfume are not just highlighted by scientific study. Many psychologists state that humans begin to store information about scents when only a few months old, and that scents affect reactions to people and events more than any of the other senses at this young age. In fact, our taste in smells remains more or less the same whereas tastes influenced by other senses are extremely changeable. This means that we choose perfumes for a reason, either it triggers a feeling of nostalgia or makes us feel a certain way. The perfume chosen also has a social relevance; it tells people something about the wearer, and helps cement their identity. Attraction to another person is influenced by invisible scents known as pheromones, and perfume adds to this. Above all, perfume makes the wearer feel fresh, attractive and more confident; and confidence is a definite benefit.

Perfumes and Fragrances

Mankind has been using perfume for quite a long time. Some people say it was first discovered in ancient Egypt and used by different civilizations such as ancient Chinese, Hindus, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans and finally reintroduced hundreds of years later in France. Ever since, French perfume has become famous worldwide and today sets the standard for excellence.

The word perfume comes from Latin, meaning ‘through smoke’. Perfume came into being in the early days, through the burning of incense and aromatic herbs. Ever since, it has influenced mankind up to a point to become a product of desire.

For those purchasing perfumes, it is wise to become familiarized with basic fragrance groups which will help to find the perfect perfume one might be looking for.

The citrus fragrance category derives from different fruits such as lime, lemon, tangerine, mandarin and others, creating a sort of refreshing aroma. Mostly used during the summer. Appropriate for office wear, day or evening wear.

The floral fragrance category derives from large varieties of flowers such as vanilla, jasmine, roses and others. It is the most popular and used fragrance group. The scent of romance and starry nights.

The oriental fragrance category derives from mixtures of spices, resins, amber, balsams and other exotic essences, creating a warm and exotic feeling. Widely used during the winter season in the evening.

The chypre fragrance category derives from different wood-moss mixes, providing earthly aromas such as oak moss and other types of wood. Chypre fragrances smell slightly dry, not very sweet. Chypre perfumes are rich and tenacious, usually for those who tend to prefer slightly out of the norm fragrances.

The green fragrance category derives from scents of pine, leaves, herbs, juniper and others, providing a sharp outdoor scent. Good day wear and occasional evening wear in warmer weather.
The Fougere category of perfume scents derives from bergamot, oak moss and geranium, and is mostly used my men. It has a classy style. Great fragrance choice for distinguished gentlemen.

These diversified fragrances will evoke different feelings and people just seem to enjoy that very much. Now that the basic fragrance groups have been explained, it’s up to one to make the best of his next perfume purchase and make use of the perfume fragrance that best suits his lifestyle.
